What are the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought?

Sydney Banks is often regarded as the pioneer of the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought. Since I will be sharing and reflecting on the 3P's showing up in my life, I thought it was appropriate to revisit what the 3P's are. Now, these are my own words and every 3P's practitioner will have a different way of explaining the 3P's.

First, a quick story about Syd. Syd was attending a marriage retreat (or something to that effect) and was speaking to someone there. He told that person that he was not enjoying himself and was having a hard time. Syd said that he was an insecure person. Whoever Syd was talking to said Syd you aren't insecure, you just "think" you are. After that, Syd had some insights into how our minds work and how we experience life.

The Principle of Mind simply says that we are alive. There is an energy, a life force, or something more powerful than us that is in control. This being is responsible for creating life itself. This being is responsible for placing planet Earth exactly where it needs to be. This being is responsible for making the planets spin, making trees grow, creating human beings, and quite frankly, is in control of everything. For me, this is God (you may have other names for Mind). Since God is in control, I simply do not need to be in control or try to be in control. We were intricately made to have this sense of inner wisdom. Some people call it a gut instinct and some call it common sense. But for some reason, new ideas or wisdom tends to come to us when our minds clear and we are no longer trying to think up whatever it was we were trying to think up. We all have access to this innate intelligence. The issue is when we get stuck in our heads, and stuck in our thoughts, we are not able to hear that innate intelligence we were born with.

The Principle of Consciousness simply means that we are aware of life. We experience life through our senses. Consciousness takes our thoughts and brings them to life so we can experience them. Every day we all have different levels of consciousness or different levels of awareness. Sometimes we are very aware of what is going on around us or very conscious and other times we are stuck in our head and in our thoughts and have no idea what is going on around us. Have you ever been in a conversation only to space out and have no idea what the other person said or is talking about? Have you had times where you were so present and focused that time seemed to fly by in what seemed like seconds but it was actually hours? This happens to everyone, everyday. And you know what, it's okay. Simply notice when you are no longer present and get back to being present.

The Principle of Thought is what Syd called the "missing link". We are able to create every moment of our life with our thoughts. We live in the "great illusion of life". Every moment is an illusion and is created by our thinking. Therefore, there are billions of realities occurring all at the same time in the world because we can only see and experience the world through our own thoughts and through the way we see the world. So every moment is an illusion. What's amazing is we get to create our life moment by moment. We are "feeling" out thoughts, moment to moment. Since that is true, the world or our life circumstances CANNOT make use feel anything. We feel our thoughts, it's as simple as that. Therefore, we don't have to try and control everything outside of us because all those things cannot make us feel anything. We don't experience our relationships. We experience what "we think" about our relationships. We are experiencing work. We are experiencing what "we think" about work. That is why some people absolutely love their job and people who are doing that exact same job might dread doing that job. Our thoughts are never true. They are neither true or false, good or bad. Never trust a thought. Many times we have a feeling and we look to the world or our circumstances to try and "figure out" why we are feeling the way we feel. But, we are only ever feeling our thoughts. We have thousands and thousands of thoughts a day. Our thoughts sometimes change in seconds. So, if you are feeling anxious, understand it is "only" because you are having anxious thoughts. And, there is nothing you need to do. Notice it, and wait for another thought to come to your mind and you will have a different feeling.

I have a really cool story I will share soon showing the power of our thoughts and how we are always feeling our thinking. As soon as our thinking changes, our feelings change with it.

If you want to dive deeper into the 3P's as I continue this blog I urge you to read Michael Neill's book called The Inside-Out Revolution. Michael has a way of explaining how we are made that are easy to understand and to understand at a level deeper than just an intellectual understanding. You will not be disappointed with that book.

Until we meet again.
