I spent a long time trying to be everything that I was not. Honestly, it was years. I was trying to be extroverted when I knew I was more introverted. I was trying to be assertive when I knew I was more compassionate and more apt to listen. I was trying to be more emotional when I knew that I was more logical. I was simply trying to be what I thought would bring me the life that I wanted.

Before I learned about the Three Principles of Mind Consciousness and Thought, I was looking to the world to fix my problems. I heard an interesting quote not that long ago that goes something like this..."We are looking for certainty in an uncertain world". When you really think about that quote it doesn't make much sense. If the world is full of uncertainty, which I think many people would agree, why do we look to the world to fix our problems?

I've been on Michael Neill's email list for quite some time. If you don't know who Michael is, he wrote the Inside-Out Revolution, among other books, and has been a prolific coach around the world. He runs a podcast called Caffeine for the Soul and his material has resonated with me for quite some time. The Inside-Out Revolution, by the way, is the first book I suggest reading when someone is curious about the Three Principles of Mind Consciousness and Thought and wanting to learn how to have an easier time of things on a day to day, moment to moment, basis.

We often talk about our feelings, insecurity, anxiety, sadness, worry, as something that is being caused by the world around us. We often blame our past, present circumstances, and the future that may or may not be. What if I told you that your feelings are a temporary state of mind created by thought. Would that make those feelings less intense? Would it seem as though those feelings don't have the power over you that you thought they did? Would you still feel the need to use your coping techniques, skills, the next popular psychology method around digging into your past and analyzing your thoughts?

One of the things I love about the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought is the knowing that there is nothing wrong with us. We all have perfect mental wellbeing. I'll say it again...we all have perfect mental wellbeing. You don't need to be fixed. You don't need a major overhaul. There is nothing wrong with you. We were made to be present and be in relationships. We were not designed to be glued to our phones, the tv, or watching the news and what next terrible thing there is out in the world and then ruminate in those thoughts and get ourselves worked up.

I had an interesting conversation, albeit short one, with someone a year or so ago. I spoke about how I learned that we are only and always ever feeling our thinking in the moment. I spoke about how our emotions were like a slap upside the head saying "get out of your head and back into your life". We can use our thinking for good, staying in the present moment, letting thoughts come and go, being creative, and looking for a beautiful feeling. Or we can use them for bad, creating our own stress, anxiety, depression, worry, fear, etc.

For most of my life I have always worried. I've written about this many times. But something that has occurred to me in the last couple years is that one thing I struggle with is anticipatory thoughts. What I mean is when I have something coming up in my life that I may have some worrying thoughts around, I tend to have a lot of thinking for many days in advance. I know this is my old self wanting to go over things again and again and again because I think it brings me comfort and makes me prepared.

There's a quote by Dr. George Pranksy that I really love. I'm going to paraphrase it because I don't have it in front of me. It goes something like this...Be grateful for your highs and graceful with your lows.

I'm on Michael Neill's email list and oftentimes find real gems when I read them. I read one recently on having a quiet mind. This is what Michael said...

I was listening to a talk by Michael Neill and Mark Howard recently when they said something that caught my attention. Too often I try to memorize what I'm hearing instead of listening for a deeper feeling as Syd Banks would say. What I heard Mark say was this...If you can't see it, you can't see it, but we keep pointing to what is there, and maybe you will see it.

For most of my life I thought my ability to over prepare for something was a huge strength of mine. I knew that no matter what I had coming up in my life, I knew how to prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. The benefit of that is that I was always prepared. I always had an idea of what all the possibilities were that could happen, how I would react, and even what I could do to prevent some of those possibilities.
