I was listening to a talk by Michael Neill and Mark Howard recently when they said something that caught my attention. Too often I try to memorize what I'm hearing instead of listening for a deeper feeling as Syd Banks would say. What I heard Mark say was this...If you can't see it, you can't see it, but we keep pointing to what is there, and maybe you will see it.
The context of that statement was regarding something that did not occur to someone for a long time. But when they noticed it, or saw it, they acted as though "duh, how did I not see that before?".
All too often, we look to resources and so called experts who can help us in some area of our life. That may be getting help with our relationships, how to feel less stress, how to make sense of something from our past that we think is still affecting us today, or the newest and latest and greatest standard psychology technique that will help you have a better life. But the focus is on the wrong thing. The focus tends to be "here is something that has happened in your life or may happen and we need to figure out how to get it to stop affecting your life".
I believed for a long time that my life was dictated by my circumstances, my genetics, and the way I was raised or what was modeled to me (or at least I figured it was because it made sense at the time). But once I saw, and truly, deeply saw that 100% of the time I was experiencing my thinking, my whole life changed. I was no longer a victim to everything that "affected" my life which I had no control over. I no longer had to look for the latest and greatest technique out there to elicit what I wanted or didn't want.
But when someone hasn't "seen" what I have "seen" than what they are doing or trying to achieve with the next technique, makes total sense. If you believe your circumstances/the past/the future/etc. is the cause of your experience every minute of the day, then it makes total sense that you need techniques. It's an honest misunderstanding.
Mark Howard said..."Usually, people blame their circumstances for creating in them certain experiences. However, the understanding of Thought tells us that we are the ones creating our experience of our life circumstances".
What an amazing thing that is that we were given the power of Thought to truly create whatever experience we want. Sometimes we create amazing experiences with our thinking and other times we create awful experiences with our thinking. The choice is yours.
Once we can "see" that our thinking creates our experience, we can focus on pointing ourselves in that direction instead of trying to figure out all the things of our past, present, and future. No techniques, nothing to learn, nothing to master or figure out, nothing to do. What comes of that? A clear, uncluttered mind.
Until next time,
Jackson Brown
