There's Nothing to do to Live a Life of Less Stress and Anxiety

I had an interesting conversation, albeit short one, with someone a year or so ago. I spoke about how I learned that we are only and always ever feeling our thinking in the moment. I spoke about how our emotions were like a slap upside the head saying "get out of your head and back into your life". We can use our thinking for good, staying in the present moment, letting thoughts come and go, being creative, and looking for a beautiful feeling. Or we can use them for bad, creating our own stress, anxiety, depression, worry, fear, etc.

What this person said to me really stood out to me. They asked me a question and it was along the lines of this..."Now that you have mastered your emotions...(I really don't remember the rest of the question). But saying I had mastered my emotions really stood out to me. They even went on to tell me how many years (yes years) it took them to master their emotions (it was 10 years if you are wondering).

When we think our circumstances cause our emotions/feelings and when we think our circumstances ultimately dictate our quality of mood and life, then mastering our emotions looks like a smart thing to do. But here is what is absolutely amazing! When I understood that I was feeling my thinking from moment to moment there was nothing I had to master. I didn't need to take a course telling me how to master my emotions. I didn't need to analyze and critique my personal thinking or things that happened in my past or things that may happen in my future. I didn't need to focus on the bright side or look for the silver lining in my personal thinking. I didn't need to reframe anything. I didn't need to, well quite literally, do...any...thing.

But I think most people have this deep rooted belief that "if I want to feel less anxiety, worry, fear, etc., then it'g going to be a long hard road that will require a ton of dedication, motivation, will power, attention, counseling, techniques etc." However, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way. With a simple shift in your understanding of where your feelings are coming from will unlock everything you ever dreamed. You will find yourself ebbing and flowing through life with greater ease, peace, and relaxation. That is when we get to live and thrive instead of just surviving. Life starts to look like a game to play and have fun with instead of a game of just surviving the day and living in dread.

Until next time,
